Bibliotheca - “Annals of the World” - 17th Century Historian Author
October 27, 2006
In the 1650s, an Anglican bishop named James Ussher published his Annals of the World that was first published in Latin and was more than 1,600 pages. This book was the first book of world history. Ussher places the history of the world starting from the Garden of Eden as October 23rd, 4004 BC, making it only a little over 6,000 years ago. But, of course, we know that human presence goes back much farther than that. For example, the first civilized village (that we know of so far) was about 30,000 years ago, dated by modern methods such as carbon dating, et cetera. Ussher’s history covers up to the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70. His date of October 23rd was determined upon the fact that most peoples of ancient times, especially the Jews, started their calendar at harvest time. Ussher concluded there must be good reason for this, so he chose the first Sunday following autumnal equinox.
