QUAERE VERITAS IN SALUM SUBJECTIO

So You Want a Pet, Part Two

Okay, you’ve decided on a dog. Now what breed and size of dog do you want?

Sporting Dogs (Gun Dogs)
Non-Sporting Dog Types
Working Dog Breeds
Hound Breed Type of Dogs
Terrier Breed Type of Dogs
Herding Breed Type of Dogs
Toy Breed Types of Dogs

There are at least 157 different registered breeds to choose from. You must keep in mind that each breed was developed for specific reasons. Be it herding sheep or just for companionship. I can’t say it enough, research. Know what you are getting yourself in for when you decide you want a Border collie or a Jack Russell Terrier for example, again do your research. Some breeds require more of your time and energy over others. For more information on the different breed types I found that these sites are very helpfully:

Now if you are looking for energy I have that in my house with eight dogs! Six of which are herding, working, sporting type breeds, two of them are the toy breed type. There are times when I can really get my pack going, and yes my editor would prefer I did this out side, but when it’s pouring rain I don’t find it as much fun as the dogs do. So regardless of the breed you choose I say get started on the right foot enroll in a puppy class, or a basic obedience class if you have adopted an older dog from your local shelter. There are also some great books out there to help when it comes to training like Cesar’s Way by Cesar Millan, How to Speak Dog by Stanley Coren, The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell, to name a few. Don’t forget dogs need rules to follow just like children. For example if you are not going to allow the dog in certain parts of the house, or on the furniture set the boundaries and stick to them. Dogs need consistency and patience when it comes to training. Remember plenty of walks on leash are brain work for you dog and socialize, socialize, socialize, and enjoy.

You will be surprised, but remember don’t pick your breed based on popularity. Pick the breed that will best suit your life style. You also should consider breed rescue – there are a multitude of breeds to choose from. Here is a list of links to some of the breed rescue sites:
