Myth Blaster - The Case of Breast Larvae Infestations
The following was sent to CJ, Wisconsin for the Myth Blaster …
… This is disgusting. Forward to all females! Wash your bras before you wear them! Please make it a habit from this point forward to wash your just-purchased undergarments before wearing them. This is sensitive. After anthropologist Susan McKinley came back home from an expedition in South America, she noticed a very strange rash on her left breast. Nobody knew what it was and she quickly dismissed it believing that the holes would leave in time. Upon her return she decided to see a doctor after she started developing intense pains. The doctor, not knowing the exact severity of the disease, gave her antibiotics and special creams. As time lapsed the pain did not subside and her left breast became more inflamed and started to bleed. She decided to bandage her sores; however, as Susan’s pain grew more intense she decided to seek help from a more certified doctor. Dr. Lynch could not diagnose the infection and told Susan to seek the aid of one of his colleagues who specializes in dermatology. Unfortunately, the doctor was on vacation. She waited for two weeks and finally was able to reach the dermatologist. Sadly, a life changing event was about to unfold during her appointment. To Miss McKinley’s surprise, after she removed the bandages, they found larvae growing and squirming within the pores and sores of her breast. Sometimes these wicked creatures would all together simultaneously move around into different crevices. What she didn’t know was that the holes were deeper than she had originally thought, for these larvae were feeding off the fat, tissue, and even the milk canals of her breast. Please share with as many women and men that you know. Our undergarments are made in different countries all over the world. They sit in boxes and go through many hands and exchanges before we purchase them. Please wash all newly purchased bras and underwear before wearing them. We do not know what parasites are in our clothing when we buy them.
This one is obvious and the Myth Blaster verdict is, of course – False – a definite hoax.
If you have received this in an email or if you look at the posting at Snopes, you can tell that the photo (I didn’t reproduce it here because it is too disturbing) is absolutely altered, so without any further evidence this is a hoax – but of course, there is more to it …
This item is another example of a common Internet phenomenon: Someone makes an image available on-line, the picture begins to circulate through e-mail forwards, the original attribution or explanation for the image gets lost along the way (or was never provided), people begin to make up stories to explain the origin of the now-sourceless picture, and those fabricated explanations become attached to the image as it continues to circulate. … This image appeared on the Internet back in June 2003 (on a web site with a collection of other manipulated photographs); at that time it carried no explanation at all … In 2005 someone combined the picture … with an existing video clip that seemingly shows maggot-like creatures being removed by forceps from a woman’s infected breast, and in November 2005 we began seeing versions that claimed the patient had developed her condition due to the flooding of New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
Hoax-Slayer declares that the “Breast Larvae Infestation from Undergarments” is a hoax. This site goes into more scientific detail than Snopes:
Cordylobia anthropophaga eggs can be deposited in soil or wet and dirty clothing that is hung out to dry, and the article advises that good personal hygiene and ironing clothes before wearing can be effective preventative measures against infestation. While eggs can be present in soiled clothing, their presence in brand new, store bought clothing seems fairly unlikely.
Urban Legends and Folklore [this one has an additional photo, including a link to the video]:
The video – which is not only authentic but proves that larvae infestations of the breast, though extremely rare, can actually occur – was downloaded from the Web site of a medical journal and attached to the email in late 2005. It originally accompanied an article entitled “Furuncular Myiasis of the Breast Caused by the Larvae of the Tumbu Fly (Cordylobia Anthropophaga)”. The case, which occurred in Nigeria, not South America … Note well that although the particulars of the Susan McKinley email remain unsubstantiated, its anonymous author does know a thing or two about circumstances promoting furuncular myiasis of the breast.
There has to be really sick people who would spread this hoax around the Internet, and if this were true, there would be several articles about it in medical journals and bulletins from the National Center for Disease Control (CDC).

The email may be a hoax but the fact of the parasite is real. I discovered a link that led me to a medidal site from Nigeria that reported a women of 70 that did become infected from a parasite called Myiasis of Diptera which is layed from the Tumba fly. After she was treated it did heal. The probability of this parasite making it’s way to other continents is not impossible but improbable.
February 9, 2007 at 9:07 am
I did not provide detail concerning the Tumba fly, because it did not directly relate to the “infested bra” hoax, but nevertheless an important fact - although rare in America/Western Hemisphere, as you point out. Thank you for your comment. Maybe you can provide the link you found and share it with other readers?
February 14, 2007 at 8:53 pm
The parasite in this infested breast picture, the faked one, is not real, you can tell by looking at it. Look at the size of the breast and the size of the larvae. The Tumba fly is also known as the bot fly, and it MUCH smaller, less than a centimeter in diameter. Although the picture is incredibly grotesque, it’s fake, the larvae are just lotus pods. The woman of 70 who was infected, as you can see in the video that is easy to find, has the Tumba larvae, which you can easily see are very small.

I am so glad to know the photo is a hoax. It was very disturbing and I have not been able to get the image out of my mind.
March 15, 2007 at 3:08 am
Yes, and the person who initiated this hoax is a disturbed person.
March 22, 2007 at 2:26 am
I walked around holding my arms around my chest for HOURS. I couldnt sleep. It is so un-settking. Its worse than how a guy would feel by seeing someone else get hit in the nads.
UGH!
April 5, 2007 at 6:12 pm
I saw the picture of that larvae infection, and went all out. I washed every thing, and I was the absolute most paranoide person in the world. Whoever made that up should be ashamed. I was scared out of my mind.

Kelly:
Unfortunately, like in the real world, cyberspace is filled with too many sick individuals who think this is a funny hoax to play on folks.
When you run across email like this or similar that don’t appear right, send it to myth_blaster@earthlink.net and I will post it and check it out or even if you have already checked it out or a friend has - send it so others may be enlightened concerning that particular subject being sent via email.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your experience, as unpleasant as it was.
April 13, 2007 at 3:50 pm
I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one disturbed by this. I thought I had a stomach for a lot of things - I never had a problem w/ horror movies. My Mom would think I was a nut. But there was something reassuring about knowing that it was not real (of course, as I got older I see that there really are sick people living among us).
But this thing - I could not get out of my mind. I literally shiver from the inside out w/ disgust everytime the image came to my mind. I saw it for the first time only yesterday and had a tough time concentrating after that. Just when you think you’ve heard/seen it all - someone else comes along and proves how sick an individual can really be.
April 23, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Likewise, my gfriend sent me the email thinking that she was doing a good thing…but the image was so disgusting. I could not get it out of my mind. So I decided the only way to stop thinking about it was to dispell it as I suspected that the pic was not real. Thanks for helping me dispell this. Some really bored people out there lacking attention. Get a life please and grow up.
April 25, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I am glad to hear that other people are as disturbed by this as I am. I saw it this morning and cannot get it out of my head. I am afraid that I will have nightmares about this. Every time I see my breast I think about it. There are some truly sick people out there. Please tell your friends to stop forwarding this e-mail!
May 4, 2007 at 2:12 pm
I know of someone in the San Francisco Bay Area that ended up with a parasitic infection of the breast that was traced to a bra purchased at Victoria’s Secret. It was determined that the bra had been infested with some kind of insect on it’s way to the US from China. The eggs hatched while the bra was being worn and the larva bore into the woman’s breast. The pictures that have been circulated are not real, but the actual occurence is not much better to look at. Quite disgusting. Yes, it happens. Wash your bra??? May not be such a bad idea after what I know now.
May 5, 2007 at 4:33 am
Yes, and I know someone with two heads.
May 6, 2007 at 8:33 pm
I was sent this email by two separate friends a month apart from each other. I was just getting over the images popping into my head unannounced from the first email when I received the second one. Even though I know it’s a hoax, the image in my head and the nausea and fear it causes continue to haunt me. This is really driving me insane. The person who originated this hoax should be locked up for life.
May 14, 2007 at 1:05 pm
I received this email yesterday, and the horrible image kept me awake all night. I am relieved to hear that it’s a hoax.
May 22, 2007 at 8:48 pm
I came across the photo a few days ago while doing some research on breast tissue changes. I saw the small picture and clicked on it to see what it was. I was horrified at what I had seen. I can’t seem to get that image out of my head. I know it is a Lotus seed pod, but the altered photo is more disturbing than actual pictures of breast larvae infestation. I was in the bathroom washing my hands before dinner tonight when I glanced into the bath tub. The drain of the tub has a metal circular plate with holes in it that resembles the infected breast. Well my dinner did not last long. I kept thinking about that image while eating and before long I was looking at the bottom of the toilet bowl.
May 23, 2007 at 11:18 pm
Monica:
The image of those parasitic worms is stomach-wrenching enough, but the photo that I chose not to publish (instead provided the link) - is truly disgusting - something out of a horror film. It is a wonder director/producers/scriptwriters haven’t come up with a horror flick with this hoax email in their plot.
June 14, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Thanks to someone with photoshop and too much time on their hands I can’t even focus today. Knowing the thing was fake from the moment I saw it just wasn’t enough; now I can’t even look at women without wondering what’s crawling around in their chests! I guess I can always dump my girlfriend and become gay, but I’ll always hold a grudge against whatever weird person took some kind of sick pleasure in grossing out thousands of people.
June 14, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Jake:
Humorous comment.
I am sure that many have a “grudge” against the moron who thought this was funny. Sadly, it is more suprising that people actually believed it! Well, one thing for sure, there are sites like this one that addresses these hoaxes and more people are getting wise and maybe this will at least slow down the hoaxes. Now if only more Spammers would get arrested. I get thousands in a week, and it seems rarely are they caught. It is a shame because I shouldn’t be taking the time to moderate comments, I would prefer them to be instantaneously posted as soon as the person writes them. But I am not going to have a bunch of pornographic junk within my comments, and like the Islamic jerk who kept writing ridiculous comments calling American women dirty names, among other things, and he has been removed from placing comments. Difference of opinion is one thing, or a rebuttal that I may not agree with - but STILL post; however, trying to use my site as a springboard for their site (without permission prior), et cetera is not tolerated. I even publish rebuittals that only consist of comments about how stupid I am and commentators who post here - and almost always with nothing to back up their opinion/rebuttal, as I have taken the time to gather facts and sources of those facts. I even have a category within bookmarks for “Corrections”, so as to address any typo errors to inform the readers. And that is where readers are so helpful. I don’t take it as an insult, but rather as a service; and certainly grateful if they caught it before I did. So, in that case, I am solely responsible.
Anyway … thanks for the comment, Jake. Check out the other subjects we have here. There is more to this e-journal than “Myth Blaster”.
June 25, 2007 at 10:28 am
I am so grateful to see other responses of how I feel and reacted about the sight of this e-mail. I now know it was a hoax but after opening it then and seeing the image for the first time became the most disturbing thing I have ever seen in my live and I am 58 years old. It may seem foolish to some that a woman would react this way, but get them to picture those same worms on anyone and surgically removing them in a video (particularly breasts and genitalia). It was truly a vile thing to do and I believe it did some real psychological damage to some people (me). Thank you for the outlet. I am really trying not to think about it, but cannot get it out of my mind yet.
July 14, 2007 at 1:58 am
Even though I knew the picture was a hoax, an image like that sticks in your mind forever, it seems. Horrified and nauseated are the only two words I can use to describe the feelings I had when I viewed the picture. Someone who could come up with that is truly a disturbed individual.
July 15, 2007 at 6:50 pm
i dont feel sick about seeing stuff . But the picture of that breast with the larva in it ( i know its fake ) but damn, i nearlly had to go to the bathroom. Making such pictures and histories should be illegal!
July 31, 2007 at 10:04 am
I am so glad I am not the only one who was truly horrified at that fake breast infestation picture. My skin was crawling and I also had a hard time sleeping that night.
August 4, 2007 at 11:10 pm
I don’t think this is fake. Here is the website that “Shannon” spoke of. Check it out!
August 5, 2007 at 8:10 am
Cynthia:
Read the article again.
Furuncular myiasis is something different and certainly not caused by not washing a bra before wearing after purchase.
The photos are fake. The worm depicted is not anything resembling the parasite described as “an extremely rare” condition. And, the Tumba fly is the cause, somehow laying its eggs on a female’s breast(s). The person creating this hoax, as in many hoaxes takes element of truth to create a hoax.
Do you actually know or have read about anyone suffering from such a malady by purchasing a bra without washing and/or ironing it?
Article stands as is.
August 7, 2007 at 3:43 pm
I saw this picture yesterday and it completely freaked me out, in fact even now the image crops into my head and makes me wanna puke. I hate the person who started this hoax, its completely messed with my mind.
August 18, 2007 at 10:17 pm
I’m with all of you….I saw the picture in the hoax email, and after that I could not stop thinking about it, it was the most disturbing thing I think I’ve seen in a LOONG time…it just kept popping into my head! It was horrible…so glad this is fake…at least the way they made it look…eckkk
September 12, 2007 at 2:00 pm
I thought i was the only one who it disgusted the first time i saw it i thought it was real but upon futher inspection it looked like something from a sci fi movie too symmetrical and all the holes in one pattern.
Unfortunately my friend sent this to me the day before finals it was sooooo gross soooo disturbing i could not study and was sooo upset with her. Fortunately i watched some kiddies cartoons and got back on track. But it was just sick! The image of the nigerian woman i can deal with but the first one made my skin crawl people saw me in the library itching like crazy and couldn’t understand.
lol
Idle ppl do stuff like this.
September 19, 2007 at 1:38 am
I saw this photo for the first time 5 months ago I have not been able to get the vision out of my head. I knew immediately that it the picture was fake I could tell buy one as a human our cell will not conform tto anything like whats on the picture and two the rest of the tissue was too healthy for that to be the case. But, still the photo was so “UGLY” I could not think of anything else for weeks! I still find myself looking for a picture of the original seed pod as comfort!
September 19, 2007 at 1:58 am
I think I found the Seed Pod used in the photo………http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/leofoo/Thai-amulets/Ipoh/index.htm
There are really sick people in the world!
October 24, 2007 at 10:44 pm
I saw this photo for the first time today and can not get it out of my head. I am very good with PhotoShop, so at first glance I knew it was fake. However, this picture if so gross it makes me want to vomit. I was taking a shower and looked at the shower head, and the pattern of circles with water coming out made my mind retrack to the picture. My stomach has been in knots since.
I can not even look at my own breasts without the haunting memory or the photo coming into my head.
Even though I know exactly how the person who manipulated this photo did it, it still makes my skin crawl.
October 30, 2007 at 7:32 pm
My mum thought she was doing the greatest thing in the world to pass on what she thinks is valuable information.
I was so disturbed by the image that I had several showers and keep looking at my tits as if I was a mad woman. Needless, to say I had not sleep the night that I opened the e-mail and I felt nauseated all the following day despite this I thought the best way to get over it was to have another look. And read about it, I am extremely relieved to know that it isn’t really real but it is still grossing me out and it is disturbing to the core. I hope it no longer lies at the fore front of my mind.
It was a lot easier to have a view of the African lady which is a very real and realistic case than it is to see the fake.
I really hope they get the SOB who created it.

Diane:
Thanks for stopping by and commenting - how are things in the good old UK?
I feel sorry for any woman who believed this nonsense, but even if they didn’t just the thought of such a possibility occurring is beyond description.
There are just too many worries on this blue planet these days without adding hoaxes to them.
Thanks again for your comment and best regards.
PS - I served proudly with the UK troops in NATO exercises and the Persian Gulf War and would like to say that I am thrilled that we have continued to be friends and partners in the endeavors to maintain peace and freedom around the world and affording others to achieve the chance of obtaining democracy. Few who remember the period known as World War II can know or remember the steadfast and stubborn resistance against oppressive forces in the form of Nazi fascists and suffered daily bombing during that tragic period in history. I will always admire and respect the people of the United Kingdom and hope we will always be friends as nation to nation and people to people.
Have a nice day.
November 14, 2007 at 12:31 pm
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=394335 please tell me that this is not the larve that are too small to have cause this to happen.
November 15, 2007 at 8:08 am
EAG:
In 1850 medical reports of the Tumbu fly depositing its eggs somehow on an African woman’s breast in Nigeria. 135 years later another case. It is extremely rare.
Thanks for the interesting link.
Unless you plan to spend some time in Africa, I wouldn’t worry about it. And if you did get infested by the Tumbu fly larvae, then you would be the third or fourth person who did in 135 years. Even the photo of the larvae in the above-mentioned email hoax is not the Tumbu fly larvae.
The article posted above covers such an incident and still shows that the email is a hoax. So I reiterate …
The above description and photos are still a HOAX.
I do believe this is the longest running/discussed Myth Blaster in LP Journal history.
November 21, 2007 at 1:39 am
The moment my mum showed me the picture, I felt extremely disturbed. Good god, who on earth would do such a disgusting internet hoax? However, it did looks as though something was amiss by the fact that the rest of her breast wasn’t inflamed or weren’t sprouting larvae. So I checked it out, and I found this site.
So thank you sooooo much Myth Blaster.
November 21, 2007 at 9:25 am

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment.
And I am glad you are at ease concerning this email hoax.
If you receive any more hoax email or email that looks like it is misinforming - feel free to send it my way at:

A coworker sent me that email i couldn’t believe what i saw. I began itching upon viewing those pictures it grosse d me out this is terrible
November 24, 2007 at 7:10 am
Yes, Trina it surely is.
December 2, 2007 at 8:21 am
OMG.. I’m soo glad that it is a hoax.. the photo is just soooo horrible!! I’m still feeling the goosebumps.. I feel just horrible now.. shouldn’t have opened that email.
December 2, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Grace:
Yes, I had drawbacks of even writing about this hoax, but felt it sort of a civic duty - people have enough to worry about in today’s world without hoax email such as this.
I am happy that I provided some relief for those who may have thought there was some truth to all of this. And, as far as the real fly larvae that could possibly cause ulcerous condition in that part of the anatomy (or elsewhere) - as you can see the possibility is quite remote, and apparently only occuring in primitive cultures.
Have a good day and thanks for taking the time to share your comment.
December 11, 2007 at 6:16 pm
HOLY COW. I have too been freaking out after seeing that image. Thank you for clarifying that it’s fake. Ugh. Upset over nothing.
December 19, 2007 at 2:02 am
Keith,
Keep up the good work. In a world where information (or rather misinformation) spreads pretty fast thanks to the internet, hats off to people like you who separate the truth from the bs.
December 19, 2007 at 4:50 pm
P.R.S.:
Thanks for the accolade …
And thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.
But the real applause goes to the readers and the folks who contribute with comments with information and discussion and the guest writers.
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.
January 4, 2008 at 3:04 pm
those pictures are extremely nasty. When my brother’s friend told me to google it I thought it was a normal joke, but was i wrong. Who ever created that picture and started the circulation of that email is a creepy individual. Why would they post something like that. I’m a very hygenic person, who takes pride in her cleanliness. Now i’m starting to second guess how sanitary i am. that person really needs to see a doctor a.s.a.p
January 5, 2008 at 6:48 am
Tierra:
I am sure that you can continue to be sanitary as you were and not overly cautious because this was all a hoax. People who create these things really need help, for sure.
Thanks for stopping by and hope to hear from you in the future concerning other issues here at LP Journal.
January 11, 2008 at 6:23 am
Hi
I have just seen the pic and the vid and i feel physically sick. Even though i have read all the comments on this page and looked at other websites explaining that it is a well known myth - it still doesn’t make it any easier to forget!
What is wrong with people - seriously!? Why don’t they have any better things to do with their time? If they need to create these chain letters why not use the idea to highlight political issues that are really going on in the world, or raise awareness of certain topics that we NEED to know about using hard facts!!?? There are some real real sad sick losers in this world who would rather spend their time finding ways to annoy and disgust the rest of us!! xxx
February 7, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Glad to hear the image is a hoax. When I first saw it I almost threw up, from the aspecet of the whole thing and just that it’d manifest in the breasts. Pores and such really really gross me out.
Thanks for the clarification.
March 9, 2008 at 3:35 pm
I’m so freaked out about this and feel so good to hear its a hoax but can you explain how they made the pictured, it is absolutely gross!
March 10, 2008 at 7:17 am
Dennis:
The wonders of digital photography. I believe one of the sites I linked explains how it was done.
March 25, 2008 at 3:47 am
I can’t explain how happy I am I found this site for days I couldn’t think strait after seeing such a desturbince my mother even asked me if something was wrong with me as I was acting like a mad women, I’m only 15 and had suspicions that the photo was fake but even so it really had me upset
the freak who thought they would make this something to laugh about should get thrown into jail I’m sure they’ve caused endless reactions like mine and many sleepless nights
thank you so much myth buster I can finally sleep !
March 25, 2008 at 7:32 am
Holly, NZ:
I am glad your uncomfortable feelings are relieved about this hoax.
Presently I am on a campaign for turning in spammers to the authorities in hopes they will pinpoint their location and arrest them. Unfortunately there are no investigators after folks sending out hoax email, to my knowledge. For now.
Anyway, thanks for visiting, sharing your thoughts, and hope you become a regular here - maybe find other stories interesting - like the recent Freedom and Jeff story about eagle and man?
Our friends just went to New Zealand (first time) for a visit. It has been on my list of places to see, but alas the closest view I have gotten of your beautiful country is the scenery in the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, directed and produced by Peter Jackson. He certainly picked the best spot in the world to film the Hobbit’s village, the river scenery, and the mountains.
It has been a thrill to correspond with someone from New Zealand - thanks again for visiting.
Sleep well -
Best Regards …
March 25, 2008 at 10:09 pm

March 26, 2008 at 6:40 am
Thanks to you, Holly.
Hope New Zealand always as beautiful as you describe and as it appears.
Thanks for your participation.
No harmful creepy crawlers is good!

Hi I’m from Cape Town, South Africa. I just received the hoax email a few minutes ago, actually it was 2 emails. The 1st had a link to the hoax, the 2nd email had a link explaining thats its a fake, which gave me GREAT relief. I am writing here ,however, because even though I read all these comments where I can see clearly that I am not the only one badly affected by this, I still have trouble right now getting over it. It feels as though the words I’m typing isn’t enough to express how i’m feeling. I not only feel upset, but I feel irritable with everyone around me and very edgy, I cant sit still, I can’t think straight. I think there are many cruel people out there who enjoy creating grotesque pictures because they get some sick enjoyment from it. I can actually feel the skin on my scalp shrivelling each time the image reappears in my head. I always wanted to travel but now I dont think I will want to go to other parts of Africa or any forests or jungles. My sister asked me a few minutes ago why I’m so upset and I explained to her about the hoax. I hope time will help me get over it. Keith I just want to say THANK you for this website, I also want to say that you should make it clear that it’s not just that Islamic guy who had no decency to insult American women. I’ve continuously come across people saying obscene and digusting things about Muslims, that includes muslim women, and Islam. This is rife on the internet. I don’t agree with ANY form of abuse toward ANY person irrespective of religion. As a muslim woman I feel horrified at the way muslim females are portrayed.
March 28, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Michiko:
What a wonderful name! And may I welcome you as the first (to my knowledge as a reader, but definitely as a commentator) South African here at LP Journal.
My how this subject has become international! And I love it. One of the benefits to me in serving in the US military is going somewhere else besides America (and even then I have been to most of the 50 states - Alaska being the only one I didn’t visit except briefly in a change of flights). And that benefit allowed me to mingle and discuss and enjoy the thoughts and culture of other nations. I often wish that more Americans would or could visit other nations. I hope during my intermingling that I presented a good representation of my country and fellow citizens.
And, since you mentioned the subject of Muslims, I am happy to announce the subject material just published today concerning Muslims against violence and extremism - check out the story of Irshad Manji. I believe you will find it a testament to those of your faith. One of the major benefits of visiting and living in foreign places was my 4.5 years in Turkey. There the Muslim does not fit the stereotype of those we too often read about in the news. And, in this respect, concerning the media, I wish to say that, like the news about the war against Islamic extremism in the form of terrorists and our troops’ mission, we do not read about the positive things occurring because of it. Rarely will you read a “humanistic” story about relationships between the troops and the citizens they are protecting. The same applies to those who are bravely standing up to the Islamic extremists who stain the honor and integrity of the Muslims’ faith. It is common historic knowledge that Mohammad interacted with Christians and Jews - he, however, like Jesus, had a different path - and in his case organizing the dysfunction of tribes that were primarily pagan into followers of the one true God. He understood the Christians and even related their tale of their founder in his writings. I have a rare 1939 copy of the Qu’ran in Arabic and English with English footnotes for explanation by the author/scholar and it is one of my treasured books in my personal library of collections. It has allowed me to understand from the viewpoint of the Muslim, as well as afforded me the opportunity to intelligently have discussion with my good friend and Turkish mentor - Mustafa, who much to my sadness has recently succumbed to cancer and is now with Allah … Insallah.
Thanks again for sharing your story about you and your sister and other thoughts, and I hope you will find other articles of interest to comment upon.
I hope one day there will be an air of understanding and tolerance between the faiths of the people of the world and we can live in peace with each other without fear of violence and anger.

OMG! My sister sent me the email with the fake breast yesterday and I was so DIGUSTED and just…..EWWWW! I don’t have the words to express how i felt about that pic. I almost CHEWED her head off for it and BEGGED her not to ever sent me an email like that again. I had to pray to God last night to get the image out of my mind. Looking back I realise that the pic really did have to be fake since surrounding tissue really looked unaffected, but when you see such a DISGUSTING pic you are not thinking straight at that moment. Thank God that I spoke to my sister today and she let me know that it was fake and gave me the link to this page. Unlike me, she thought something was wrong and tried to verify whether or not it was true.
The person who did this should be tortured and thrown in jail. The key to his/her cell should then be thrown into the deapest ocean. I just don’t understand how SICK a person’s mind could be! This is just ludicrous! You can only pray for sick souls such as this person.
I’m so glad that i can sorta laugh about it now, knowing that it was fake because I tell you, if i live till I’m 100 I don’t think I will see something more distgusting than that pic.
Keith,
Thank you SO VERY MUCH for letting us all know that that pic just does not exist. Even writing about it and being able to read about how others felt is so therapeutic that i cannot thank you enough for having this website and addressing the issue of this email.

I received the hoax email tonight from my mom (bless her heart) who has just recently discovered the internet and email. You can imagine all the forwards I get…
Anyway, thanks for your review of this hoax. I ‘forwarded’ your site to her so she can check out all the wierd and wonderful things she finds on the net!

April 10, 2008 at 10:41 pm
OMG!!!!! I am so glad I am not the only one who this picture disturbed. I seen it today and it is haunting my mind. HOAX OR NOT! I am so distrubbbbbbed!! EW EW EW sorry but that was gross. I want to smack my friend that sent it to me..
April 18, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I was looking online recently for a picture of a rash that my partner has on his foot, to try and work out what had caused it (prickly heat, coincidentally), and came across the picture of the ‘breast infestation’.
I have never seen anything more disturbing. It really is horrible. I have felt like I am itching all over all day, and I can’t stop thinking about the image. I immediately removed my bra (apologies for being overly graphic), checked it, and handwashed it (again, although it was already clean). I felt so ill, I could not eat dinner, couldn’t even stand my partner touching my arm.
Although I had already found that this picture and email is a hoax, I cannot forget it. What type of twisted, moronic person created this ‘helpful’ insight into breast health?
I hope they find something equally as upsetting to themselves in future, and see how they would cope with seeing/having that kind of sick infestation in one of their OWN body parts!
Absolutely sick.

I am soooo glad it was only a hoax… My god I just received the email and saw the picture and it was just plain disgusting and horrible! My whole body kept crawling ( and actually still is although I know it is a hoax )I can’t believe anyone would make a picture like that to scare people! It’s just sick…
I know now that I gotta send a reply to my friend who sent it to me to tell her that it’s just a hoax and not real ( probably send a link to this site too )… there is an infestation but it does not look like that.
Anyways, thank you so much Keith for telling us about it ( the information and everything and creating this website to tell us about it ), I wouldn’t be able to sleep and would become all paranoid if I had kept thinking it’s real… So thank you so very much!
But d*** that person who made that picture, I don’t think I will ever get it out of my head…
April 19, 2008 at 1:00 pm
god..seeing this pic made me itch all day. I am soooo happy that it’s not real. Seeing the seed pod made me feel relieved. What a jerk who created this pic!
April 19, 2008 at 3:21 pm
That picture is just disgusting!! I have a small mark on my breast and was looking on the internet to see what it could be and that image came up!! I’m relieved to know that it is fake but it is still freaking me out. I don’t know what it is about that picture because real pictures do not have this effect on me. Whoever created it is sick. All of these comments are reassuring because at least I know that I’m not the only person who has been disturbed by it.

Terr & Claire (UK):
Thanks for visiting and sharing your thoughts.
I hope eventually this hoax will disappear from the Internet. It is surprising how long it has lasted on the chain email circuit.
Best Regards …

That is a powerfully disturbing image. Even though I know it’s a fake, it will stay with me. There are some truly sick people out there.
May 8, 2008 at 10:17 am
Thanks Keith, for telling us that this email is just a hoax.
I received it from my friend one morning, and it kept haunting me - even until now it still does. When I was having biology my mind drifted to the image for several times and I just can’t concentrate, even if I already had a feeling that the grotesque photo isn’t real. And I’m not the sort of girl who can easily be freaked out, I see autopsy videos and they don’t have THIS effect on me. I can’t help wondering, why do I feel like this?
When I went back home, I spent almost the entire day searching the web to find some prove that it’s just a madman doing some sick stuff. I’ve found many websites like this, and now all I wanna do is just shout as loud as I can and tell everyone not to open this email if they receive it.

Thank you Montiq, for clarifying the picture of this disturbing so call parasite. I also check out the picture of the Ipoh seed, and it is exactly the same. woooo, that is a relieve that no one will actually get such an discusting disease. Some of my co-workers are still nausios with the picture inprinted in their heads. But after researching in the internet this is truly a hoax, a discusting hoax.

Oh my gosh… It’s really sick!!! Juz received this e-mail from my friend and it really freaks me out when i saw the picture… But still interested, how do they do it to make the picture look so real? But felt better when i saw these comments. Tnks =>
May 23, 2008 at 6:14 pm
It was terrible! I got the email today and I couldn’t sleep. I cleaned the house all night. I’m feeling still nervous. Thank you all for sharing your feelings. Yes I agree there are sick people out there. Anyway I’m feeling better now. Hope you all get better soon…
May 27, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I can’t stop iching! Even tho i know its fake and you can tell straight away i just cant, i feel totally sick! Thank God for websites like this!!
June 1, 2008 at 7:23 am
I’m really glad I’m not the only one who feels as strongly about this image as I do. I can’t work out why it bothers me so much but it is just one of the rankest things I’ve ever seen, even though I know it’s fake!! Makes me want to vomit. The person who created it by merging the flower pod picture and the breast obviously knew what would really revolt people. Wish I could get the image out of my head now! Ugh!
June 12, 2008 at 2:31 am
Whoever did that photomanip and the email would have to be one of the most sickest people in the world today. I got the hoax email this morning, and while I immediately knew it was a fake, it still revolted me - and up until now I can’t concentrate on work. I keep staring at my breasts like a demented woman, ugh.
People like that should seriously get a life.
June 17, 2008 at 9:14 am
O my lord. This image is seriously disturbing; I saw it on youtube and I was like -What the hell is that?! that’s disgusting!- This image has been stuck in my head for two days straight now. Knowing it’s fake doesn’t even change it ;-;
June 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm
I recieved this email about 2 months ago and didnt give it a second though, however, we know how the mind plays tricks on us..I am pregnant and have sore breasts, lol, so in my weird pregnant dream state, it was all that i could think of, and thanks to this photo I was wide awake at 2:30 am…..I am really glad its not real though, its a huge reliefe.

Hi Keith. How are you keeping? It’s been a while since I’ve been on your site again, been very busy with assignments. To be honest, I didn’t want to ever return to THIS page(breast larvae hoax) of your site in particular, because the topic at hand really disturbed me at the time I posted my first comment in March. However, I feel I need to say to women that at this point, time really does heal.
It does not bother me anymore, I dont have the image popping in my head, feeling itchy all over, like I experienced when I just saw the picture, and some days after, but I felt it necessary to ask myself the same question the ladies above have, ie. “why did it bother me so much?” and why it has such a horrible effect on a person, and reading about how these women feel, I realise that whoever did it, was fully aware of the impact it would have on the minds of women. This seems obvious (I know, it is a hoax), but why something this extreme?
There are people out there who enjoy looking at gore and other sick things on the internet, then there are normal people like us, who can’t stand seeing humans or any life form in any kind of pain, or graphic pictures of people with rare illnesses suffering ,etc. This is what happens when you look at this picture, and the sad thing is, it’s not enough to have websites containing such pictures anymore, they email these to people to make sure everyone receives them.
So what I’ve done is, I’ve told everyone who emails me, to check thoroughly if any strange looking pictures or stories being forwarded to them is a hoax or not, before they send it to me. If they are in doubt they should not send it to me at all, and I think everyone should do that from now on to save people getting stressed unnecessarily over hoax pictures and emails.
That is at least one precautionary measure I can think of. Other than that, keep an open mind and always consider the fact that whatever you may end up looking at, could possibly be fake. I thought I would have to start avoiding the internet altogether, but it’s such an integral part of our lives, I am constantly using it in research with my studies [and in studying Science, Keith, I am sure you know how important that is
] , so I do not stray to sites with nonsensical or rubbish content, and I stick to academic ones…and ones with interesting and useful content like this one.
Have a good day.

Michiko:
Before I give any detailed comment wanted to quickly request that you not leave the Internet. That would leave the “nasties” in charge!
Intellectual folks like yourself are needed to keep the Internet (for the most part) as many intellectuals, academics and folks who actually THINK - a true place of learning, following interests and “meeting” folks around this planet that have similar interests, ideas to express, et cetera. Folks like you, Michiko, and, to name just a very few: Tom Carew (guest writer here) from Ireland, Dr. Kessler from Switzerland, et cetera.
So hang in there and don’t let them win.
Best Regards,
K

Whether or not this particular story is fiction, but the Tumbu Fly is not. My family lived in Africa when I was young and we had this happen to us twice. The treatment is fairly simple if traumatic: apply petroleum jelly to cut off air supply to the larvae, wait for it to surface, then squeeze it out of the flesh.
