Myth Blaster – Nancy Pelosi Wants Windfall Tax

HM, Illinois received an email entitled Pelosi Wants a Windfall Tax on Retirement Income

You aren’t going to believe this.
Madam speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including Retirement fund, 401Ks and Mutual Funds! Alas, it’s true – all to help the 12 million illegal immigrants and other unemployed minorities! … When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied:
“We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long ways to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as ‘Americans’.” … if you are RETIRED, or expect to be, it will affect you.

MYTH BLASTER VERDICT: False. Hoax. Another version is published at Snopes. [Original email date is January 2006, and be careful of this site when it concerns politics] –

Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic Leader who became Speaker of the House after the 2006 elections, has gone on record as supporting the repeal of tax breaks and subsidies of up to $33 billion from energy and oil companies … However, the item produced above, quoting Rep. Pelosi is disdaining recent stock market gains and endorsing a 100% windfall profits gained from stocks … does not correspond to anything she actually said or proposed. …

However, Nancy Pelosi is a socialist advocate for stealing from the wealthy and giving to the poor [called income redistribution, in the case of the government forcefully] – and she is also an advocate (remember she is from Mexifornia) to give amnesty to 12 million lawbreakers. Pelosi and the Democrats have been attempting to roll back the Bush tax cuts – and you can be sure this will happen if a Democrat is elected as President in 2008.

Here are some facts about Pelosi:

President Bush:

When we lowered the taxes for families with children, she voted against it. And when we put the death tax on the road to extinction, she voted against it. …

And yet, Nancy Pelosi said of the Republicans and Bush:

They’ll take food out of the mouths of children in order to give tax cuts to the wealthiest.

And, yet, there are blogs out there who are repeating these words as if they were truth. I don’t know which came first – the email hoax or the blog misinformation. An example would be at the My Opine blog. Notice that the blog doesn’t have one link to follow up his claim of what exactly Pelosi said.

As far as Pelosi’s voting record:

Voted NO on retaining reduced taxes on capital gains & dividends.

Voted NO on providing tax relief and simplification as prescribed by the Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2004.

Voted NO on making permanent an increase in the child tax credit.

Voted NO on making the Bush tax relief permanent that are to expire in 2010.

Voted NO on $99 economic stimulus: capital gains & income tax cuts in 2002.

Voted NO on eliminating the Estate Tax (“death tax”) – so, Bush was right to make that comment above.

Voted NO on $46 billion in tax cuts for small business – 2000.

Nancy Pelosi says and does real things that is detrimental to America and its people – no one need to make up stories such as the one above because the truth is damning as it is.

  1. I just received this email and figured I’d check to make sure it was a hoax as I suspected. You did a very nice job poking holes in it and your closing bit about how “no one need to make up stories such as the one above because the truth is damning as it is” is so very true.

Excellent site, btw. Keep up the good work!

  2. Still, Nancy needs to be asked to her face if she ever got a job from a poor person.

  3. Nancy Pelosi sounds out of place in American. She should go to a communist country with her beliefs. Let people keep what they worked for. She can give her large salary to others if she feels that concerned.

  4. I agree with KW and Sandra Sims, Nancy Pelosi can donate her retirement, 401K and whatever else she’s got saved to all of her illegal immigrants. That way she won’t have to worry about them..matter of fact let her house, feed and clothe them, in addition to paying all of her “beloved taxes”.

  5. “KW, on May 15th, 2008 at 7:36 am Said:
Still, Nancy needs to be asked to her face if she ever got a job from a poor person.”

How do you think she got elected?

  6. CM:
Good comment, thanks for taking the time to share thoughts and participate. People don’t get employed by Democrats (or Republicans) or the people that preach about “evil” corporations – it is people with the savvy, education and drive to make profits (especially great when they have a profit-sharing program , then everyone gets a piece of the pie) that provide jobs – not government legislation, which actually has a negative affect upon the economy as a whole. And what is their solution to the problem of fuel costs? Raise taxes. Which makes the problem worse because people are in business and are employed to make profits, which in turn affords them to be part of the big economic cycle.
    Good perception, thanks.
    Best Regards …

  7. Nancy Pelois will have a lot to answer for one day on what she did to destroy this country…but evidently no one is going to hold her accountable today for her insane statements and dangerous beliefs (the real ones). Dangerous, because she has the power to implement them. We get the kind of govt we deserve. Too many people who want to be given everything and not enough people with the motivation to educate themselves, work their tails off, be adaptable…where the heck is American ingenuity and independence? …oh bother …this is going to give me an ulcer.

  8. Peggi:
Don’t get ulcers, get determined. Vote smart and ensure that those elected already like Pelosi don’t get their way. Fortunately this particular legislation never passed Congress, and according to the White House sources, President Bush would have vetoed it if it did pass.
It is important that citizens keep a watchful eye on Congress when legislation is being passed through for a vote and ensure that useful and important legislation, like the Fair Tax Act passes. Keep in touch with your rep and senators – let them know you don’t want politics as usual in Washington.
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
    Best Regards …

  9. This is great! Your site debunks the story and most responders continue as if it’s true.
I was unaware that America has been destroyed by Nancy Pelosi! And democrats do employ people! In fact, there are those would argue that this county has been attacked by the current administration, i.e. trampling on the constitution, destroying our reputation in the would, etc. But, you don’t help by vilifying those who think differently than you. Oh, but I forgot, you’re not trying to help are you? This whole story is most likely a ploy by right-wing republicans to gain some traction in an election year where they have none. It feels like a continuation of the old “elect through fear” strategy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a democrat, but I can certainly make an attempt to view both sides of an issue and have a reasoned debate. Have a go at it some time, but make sure it’s an actual issue first. Thanks Myth-Blaster!

  10. DS:
It is because it is true.
America’s possible destruction culminates from several points and issues; Pelosi is just one of many human factors.
Employment? I don’t see anything in this article about employment.
Thanks for sharing your uninformed opinion.
The Democrats are experts at using “fear” tactics, obviously you are aware. If you are not an avid Democrat, you must be a socialist – because Pelosi (look it up) is a member of the Democratic Party and also affiliated with socialist organizations.
The voting record presented tells all.
If you are viewing “both sides” your commentary doesn’t reflect this.
The article remains as is – and after the article was written, the gist of the subject material was certainly revealed in truth. And all was moot because it failed to pass. If you want to be taxed to death, maybe we can let the IRS and other agencies know you have volunteered. As for the rest of us, we would rather see our government (people of either party) start budgeting instead of reaching in our pockets for more, and more.
Thanks for your opinion, and paraphrasing a Democrat congressman: You have freedom of speech and the rights to express your opinion; however the First Amendment doesn’t mean people have to agree with misinformation and non-factual rhetoric.
    And, you’re welcome.
    Now, what was your point?

  11. DS:
In regards to your “employment” interjection:
It is not the government’s responsibility to employ people – and any politician from any political camp you tells you different is lying through his teeth.
Employers, business entities, employ people. Government only employs people to run their bureaucracy. And our government needs to size down to be more efficient and cost effective.
Thanks for bringing this up and allowing me to reiterate that point.

  12. NANCY IS A FREAK!!! I AM GLAD AS A INDEP…I AM VOTING FOR MCCAIN BECAUSE THERE ARE TO MANY…LEFT WING CRAZY PEOPLE. IT IS TRUE SHE DOES WANT WIND TAX…YOU CAN’T EVEN TELL WHEN SHE IS TELLING THE TRUTH…SHE BLINKS LIKE CRAZY!!! SICK BITCH THAT IS WHAT SHE IS!!!

    CIAO
    LET’S GO MCCAIN

  13. If in fact most if not all comments/votes, are true about Pelosi, I suggest you direct all E-mails to her office. However the response you get will be nothing short of BS.
A women on a power trip who needs to be put in her place as well as anyone else in
office and have been there so long they are like a piece of the furniture that needs to be replaced. Folks you vote, so those in the CA state need to do just that.
    Thanks KAL for your commits.

  14. Hal ? …
Thanks for your participating commentary and visiting LPJ.

  15. KAT …
    Thanks for your passionate comment.
Question: If you are independent, why are you supporting Senator McCain? I realize that if there are no other viable candidates in the final vote for President this year, one will have to choose the best of the worst of the candidates available, if that is your reasoning in making your choices. Senator McCain was in cahoots with Senator Feingold (D-WI) and instrumental in passing legislation that is against the First Amendment and voting rights. In addition, Senator McCain has pretty much had a voting record that matched members of the Democratic Party – like his stance on the illegal immigration issue, and no different than Senator Obama’s views.

  16. Peggi,

It’s obvious that you are a repub, and you only believe that only the strong survive, but what seperates this country from most third world countries is our compassion for the B-, C+, C, C-, and down type people out in the world. This is written on the statue of liberty; They came here for several centuries for the same reasons – freedom and hope — and then a Frenchman created a statue that embodied their hopes and dreams. And it embodied America’s promise as well. “Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free…”

I actually don’t believe that everyone that has “immigrated” from other countries to the new world or America were perfect, but maybe their kids, or grand kids were. What I’m getting to is our country should never be taken advantage of, which is now happening with imagration now (thank you current congress), and in the near future (thank you GW’s super highway), so lets make sure we don’t separate ourselves too far from where our ancestors recently came from – another country. Hey, I do believe and agree that we either need expand the total acrage of the U.S., or start limiting our boarders to everyone that wants to jump our boarders eligally.

But, it starts with leaders, and lately most of our leaders, senators, govenors, and local politicians are being bought off by corporations every single day. The amount of promissed goods, services, and kick backs from the freelance lobiests are amazing. Have you ever seen their budgets? No, because these crafty magicians move money so fast that if you blink – it’s gone/transfered.

What I’m getting at is that we the working people of this country want more oversight on goverment and control of our countries future. Go ahead and vote for McCain, and have us pay 6 bucks a gallon by next year at this same time, and the possibility of the entire country being shut down (hence the super highway, but that’s another story), or bring the country closer and vote for a guy I met in hawaii that has a pretty good game on the American basketball court (yah, he sucks a bowling). My highschool played his highschool in a scrimage game/pre-season and be Punaho’s asses. However, that is a great school and it’s no different then your highschool down the street. It’s just a private school, and I wasn’t rich enough to attend their, but my hot ass girlfriend was.

Ok, I’m getting away from what I was talking about. BUT, we have got to get away from a man that is indorsed by over 120 lobbyiests, and is strongly tied to coruption with Cheney and Bush, and the rest of the horde that is trying to destroy our countries integrity and immage – ooops! That’s already been done by them/repubs.

So, have a wonder day driving freely and eating out while 80 percent of the world that would kill to be here starvs to death.

    Aloha!

  17. Jabberjaw –
Your chosen handle fits your rhetoric.
    Jabbering, Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
“to talk rapidly, indistinctly, or intelligibly”.
I won’t even get into the statement concerning Peggi – “It’s obvious that you are a repub”.
Continue to have unmonitored and flowing illegal immigrants (immigration law breakers) then there will be no difference between third world countries and America.
Your blathering concerning the Statue of Liberty and its representation of welcoming folks looking for a better life still applies – except we had to make immigration laws to control how many immigrants are allowed in per annum. Ellis Island is no longer operational and since America is not interested in expanding, since the states cover geographical expanse from “sea to shining sea”, this is what your generation calls “old school” – but our heritage and history nonetheless. In fact, America has one of the most liberal immigration statutes in the world – much more liberal/tolerant than Mexico, the place where the government condones and encourages illegal immigrants, as long as it is in America.
And what is more confusing in your rhetoric is that you agree there should be a limitation upon immigration in the second paragraph.
Your corporation statement comes straight from the Communist Manifesto. Read Karl Marx on capitalism and study history how communism works, paying attention to the socialist rhetoric that creates social disorder and at the same time stating that everyone should be the same – economically, et cetera.
Lobbying is a good thing, but it must be regulated. Have you really examined the lobby system? Lobbying gets good legislation passed, and stops useless and harmful legislation.
What school of brainwashing have you attended?
I must agree with you government budgeting must be addressed – concerning both political aisles in Congress.
What makes you think that if Senator Obama becomes president that the oil pricing and other economical ailments are going to disappear? Look at his planned agenda concerning social programs. Who do you think will be paying for that?
I really don’t think Peggi or most of the readers care what high school you intended or that your girlfriend went to a private school (she is probably more educated than you are) and I doubt if anyone cares if your girlfriend’s posterior is “hot”.
Despite the Republican Party’s drawbacks and messing up the fact that they had the majority in Congress but didn’t put any real good use to it, and that I agree with you that on certain issues, President GW Bush can be labeled dysfunctional; however the American voter once again must choose the best of the worst. Senator McCain voted on several issues the same as Senator Obama. But, of course, the differences have been plainly written in this e-journal in several articles, to include the reasons why I had considered “none of the above” – but that would give misguided, ignorant and brainwashed folks like yourself an edge on the voting process. I wonder if Senator Obama loses that folks with your ideology would cry “foul” when the vote count is over.
Your last statement concerning 80% of the world – are you suggesting that that amount of the world population needs to be immigrated here in America?
And what makes you think a Republican or a real conservative isn’t compassionate? The law of the survival of the fittest is not in the political platform of the GOP, nor is it part of the ideology of grassroot conservatives – it is the law of nature. Americans, in general, are the most free-giving people and are famous for their myriad of charitable donations to many organizations and causes.
Here is a concept – Why not think for yourself instead of parroting planned rhetoric from the political left?

  18. I think we need people like Nancy.

Sure she’s nuts, but that’s exactly who we need to launch political counterpoints to the hypocritical republicans. ( i.e. most of them )

One day they will agree with her, then they will be exposed for the hypocrites, that they don’t actually realize that they truly are.

The human race is finally leaving the nation-state philosophies behind, and embracing humanity as a whole on the global level. This is lead by the left, and the right, will sink faster than the McCain Campaign is.

Poor John, already knows he will only be known as an “also ran”, it’s already written on his face.

    ~J R

  19. J.R. –
The Democrats wrote the book on hypocrisy. However, there are some within the GOP. The issue here is increased taxation, which is the Democrat’s way of providing more funding for Congress to wastefully spend. Meanwhile, the American taxpayer is re-budgeting and Congress should be doing the same thing. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do what congressional members do with our tax money?
The day that Ms. Pelosi’s policies are followed will be the end of the American democratic republic and in its place a socialist democracy, or a worse scenario.
If you refer to sovereignty being a “nation state” than what kind of nation would this be? If you want all this, why not move to some place that has all of these things – minus the freedom and liberties you are enjoying now? I am sure that the majority of us who don’t want the America Pelosi and those in her camp they would like to create would help you pack your bags.
I cannot defend “John” because, guess what? Most of his issues match Obama’s – especially concerning illegal immigration.
Can’t you come up with something better in the form of a rebuke? I hope you don’t represent any expressive amount of the American population – we would certainly be heading for trouble.
    Have a nice day.

  20. I wonder if she has any illegal people working for her, as most well-to-do people have in the central coast of California do have. Even if she doesn’t the people that donate to her re-election campain fund do have illeagal’s working for them. So there fore our Government is for sale and it goes to the highest bidder.

  21. [...] Speaker Nancy “Windfall Tax” Pelosi … I didn’t come here to be partisan; I didn’t come here to be bipartisan. I came [...]

  22. I personally don’t care if the Republican party goes the way of all Whigs and the Democratic party follows soon afterward.
It is really hard to get good American representation in Congress for the middle income earning group when we pay them (or allow them to pay their future selves) more than the median income for the people they represent. Maybe if they were given a more representative pay, there would be more altruism and less greed among those seeking to run for office.

  23. Fern:
Thanks for input, I edited so you don’t need to do so in second comment.

  24. Enjoyed reading your comments/rebuttals. But as a McCain supporter from the beginning, I don’t understand the major opposition to McCain/Feingold. It seems the main issue is people believe it limits their first amendment rights. This seems to be a stretch. Perhaps it did not work as intended, but the goal was to limit the rich being able to influence politicians to their advantage. Not a bad goal. You say McCain voted similar to Obama, the Democrats labeled him “Bush light”. I think neither is true. One of the reasons I like McCain is because I feel his (and Bush’s) immigration policies are more reasonable than the two extremes (kick everyone out/let everyone in). But I guess this is all water under the bridge now.

I was directed to this site by Snopes while researching the Pelosi windfall tax “myth.” This may be different than the “federalizing 401k” rumor. I still don’t know the truth on either.

  25. Cathy:
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment …
I suggest you follow the link(s) concerning McCain’s voting record. He also angered military veterans when he voted against an important Veteran Administration legislation, upgrading, et cetera. Once upon a time, when Senator McCain was younger, he followed the Reagan principles of statesmanship, and indeed he continued fighting against earmarks/pork in legislation, but unfortunately submitted some of his own in the course of his legislative history.
It is not a stretch concerning the First Amendment – freedom of speech. The legislation (McCain-Feingold) forbids a period of time before Election Day to voice against or for a particular candidate. I realize that the object was to deter the character assassination and untruthful rhetoric/verbal attacks in the final days of an election campaign – but it backfired, mostly because of the wording, where only certain media could “qualify” to express their views concerning candidates. That is basically the gist of that.
Bad legislation has been passed under terms of “good intention”; however, it is usually turning out bad because they push it through without doing their homework and configuring the short-term as well as the long-term consequences – and then when it doesn’t perform like it was meant to, et cetera, legislators fail to correct their mistakes. Politicians never like admitting to mistakes.
Thanks again for your contribution and intellectual discussion.

  27. I just got this email today. It’s recirculating in 2009. I am as far RIGHT as you could probably get, but this is silly. She REALLY does and says enough to insert her foot in her mouth ALL THE WAY TO HER HIP, she doesn’t need any help from the right wing to make her look like a MARXIST. “The means justify the ends” where she is concerned, and NOBODY is going to change her politics.
Ask her about cutting the budget for the Airforce all the while using Airfoce planes and personel to fly herself and friends/family across country. I’d like her answer to that.
