The Second Amendment - Some Folks Just Don’t Get It
In most states, registered concealed carry permit holders are not allowed to enter a facility or establishment armed that serves alcoholic beverages. It is not because they are anti-Second Amendment; it is something that could prevent problems occurring with intoxicated armed patrons.
However, in Virginia recently it is reported that that state sees things differently, especially after the shooting at Virginia Tech, where 32 people died at the hands of a madman with a gun – and no person present was armed to stop it or prevent the killings.
Matthew Barakat, Associated Press writer reports in an article dated May 14th 2008, Guns in Restaurants Draw States But Little Outcry …
The patrons at Champps, an upscale restaurant and bar chain, were eating ribs and drinking beer on a recent Saturday when customer Bruce Jackson stood up and made an announcement: He was armed and so were dozens of other patrons. … The diners returned to their burgers and Budweisers.
The Virginia Citizens Defense League organized the gathering at Champps to prove a point: that the presence of armed customers in northern Virginia restaurants would elicit little more than shrugs.
Unfortunately, all state governments are not equal, nor do they comply with the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
In this state of Wisconsin, the state assembly worked hard to pass a good piece of legislation that would allow Wisconsin state residents to carry concealed firearms if they met the requirements of a state-approved permit. However, about a year before Governor Doyle’s reelection campaign, he vetoed that bill. The veto was to be overridden, however one Democrat chickened out at the last minute and change his vote, where a two-thirds majority is required to override a governor’s veto.
Governor Doyle has been reelected and as soon as he is, he immediately pushes for a $1 billion tax hike that raises the prices of all permits, licenses and other state fees at least 25%. He never mentions that Wisconsin state residents be allowed the opportunity to attain a permit because he is still against it. One wonders what the Supreme Court is in place for. It allows states to defy the Bill of Rights and the Constitution that is supposed to be the law of the land, and indeed requires that all states of the Union comply with those established laws within their own state constitutions.
So why doesn’t all 50 states have laws like Virginia?
It is because the citizens do not demand much of anything from their state governments, except when it comes to social programs. It doesn’t matter if a governor lies twice just before an election and then is reelected because they are angry at President Bush and therefore angry at the GOP as a whole, not realizing that there are honest men and women within the GOP who truly believe in their job to protect the rights and liberties of the American citizens and uphold constitutional law.
It is an embarrassment to the state of Wisconsin, the likes of Doyle and his minions, to read of liberty in action – people arming themselves for protection, acting responsibly, and living in a state of peaceful surroundings – unafraid of the predatory criminals within our society because they can protect themselves, their families and those that require protection within the community.
And that is what the Second Amendment is all about. Not the state militia or the fact that Americans are “allowed” to use firearms for hunting and sports activities such as target practice and sharpshooter contests.
It is time to reinstate the actual rules established within the Second Amendment by those Founders who say the need for such a liberty – with foresight and far sight, they seem to have been more sensible then, while present “statesmen” are dabbling with socialist ideology and toying with our Constitution.
